Modular Shelving | 2023

Project Brief
Design a furniture piece for a specific user, focusing on manufactoring processes, material selection, and functionality. The user was a college student in a small apartment in need of organization.

Solution
A modular shelving unit for the entry way that has flexibility to meet users need while being asthetically pleasing and affordable.

Research Methodology

I interviewed a college student in their apartment to determine what pain points they had with their current furniture. Organization in the entryway and other common spaces were the main places of concern.

Preliminary Concept Sketches

Iteration

I focused on the entryway but I was not happy with the form development from the original concept phase so I started from the ground up. I focused in on solutions for the entryway with the goal to break the box structure seen with most modular shelves.

Design Freeze

3D modeling allowed for the piece to evolve quickly and develope a build plan. The final model was a plywood piece cut on the CNC machine. 3D printed custom hardware was then attached to create the modular sections.
